“It is a pleasure for Serendipity Institute for Black Arts and Heritage to support the Outstanding Women in Arts, Media, and Music Awards 2023. The arts, media, and music are essential for bringing people together, for communicating key issues, making change, and even in the midst of difficult times they offer an opportunity to share moments of joy.
For Serendipity Institute for Black Arts and Heritage, championing the voices of women in arts, media, and music is a foundation of our work, as an organisation founded and led by women and in redressing the balance.
Women In Journalism monitored racial and gender diversity over the course of a week in July 2020 and found not a single report by a Black female writer made the front page of a UK newspaper and that Black women were also excluded as experts quoted in stories. In the week monitored, just one Black woman was quoted on a front-page report out of 111 interviewees.” – Pawlet Brooks MBE, CEO & Artistic Director, Serendipity Institute for Black Arts and Heritage.
